Homer Edward
Martin
December 12, 1931 – October 13, 2019
Homer Edward Martin, age 87, longtime resident of Carrizo Springs, went to be with the Lord on October 13, 2019. He was born to Edward and Cleo Martin on the Martin Farm in Yancey, Texas, December 12, 1931. He attended Yancey schools playing baseball, football, and basketball with his childhood friends for the mighty Yancey Tigers. He was president of his Senior Class graduating from Yancey High School in 1949.
After High School, Homer went on to accept a scholarship at Texas A&M University to play baseball, but, he was also given an opportunity to pitch for the Boston Red Sox Farm Team. He went with the Red Sox and played baseball across the United States until he was drafted into the Army in 1952. He was stationed in Germany and pitched for the Army baseball team in Europe.
Upon returning to Texas, Home married Florrie Giller of Asherton, Texas on April 29, 1960 in Uvalde, Texas. They settled in Carrizo Springs where Homer was actively involved in many aspects of the community. He coached Little League, served on the Chamber of Commerce as a board member in several different capacities, and, both him and Florrie, stayed active in the First Baptist Church. He also stayed connected to the Yancey Methodist Church as a long distance lifetime member. Homer was very humble about his contributions to the community, but it was known that he would help anyone in need and he would usually make sure he did this anonymously. He truly believed that All we leave the earth is the good we have done.
Homer was a rancher and true conservationist. He loved to work his land, feed his cows, and watch and preserve the wildlife on his ranches both in Dimmit and Medina Counties. One of his hobbies was finding and preserving arrowheads in South Texas. He also liked to hunt and fish, but really liked to see others do these activities on his places even more.
Homer worked for the Tesoro Petroleum Corporation for many years. Eventually, he became their sales representative for the Southwestern United States. He also was known to help out entertaining their clients by traveling to Alaska for the Corporation and heading fishing expeditions as their representative.
Homer was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florrie Giller Martin, and his parents, Ed and Cleo Martin, his brothers Oliver R. Martin and Rev. Fred Martin, sister-in-law Jane (Lester) Martin, and bother-in-law Bill Welsch. He is survived by his sister Mary Lee (Martin) Welsch. His sister-in-law Janice (Ronnie) Martin Geyer. His nieces and nephews Janice (John) Martin-Drabier, Jack Martin, Linda (Alan) Martin Bohlen, Joan Martin Horton, Colleen (Chris) Welsch Ellis, Monica Welsch, David (Jennifer) Martin, and Jana (Evan)Martin Jones.
