Irene Pauline Poerner Fohn was born on December 4, 1916, in D'Hanis, Texas, to Henry and Mollie Zerr Poerner. Irene married Herman Nicholas Fohn on July 22, 1940, and they were blessed with five children. Mary, Anne, John, Dorothy and Madelyn. Irene was known by locals as the hairdresser who gave the "best haircuts around". Her home in Old Town was framed by her beautiful yard that reflected her love for gardening. As written by Josie Finger, " It takes a heap of living to make a house a home, and this example of a lovely Victorian house-porches and banisters-with its spacious grounds and flowers where grandchildren now playmany rooms for living and loving- that have made this house a dear, dear home". Irene was preceded in death by her husband, her son, John Herman and his wife, Ginger, her son-in-law, Tommy Wilson, her grandson, Travis Attaway, and her brother, Mervin Poerner. Irene is survived by her daughters and sons-in law, Mary and Kenneth Bendele, Anne and Joe Sowa, Dorothy and Tom Attaway, and Madelyn Wilson. She is also survived by grandchildren Marcia and Ray Murphy, Fohn and Jana Bendele, Eric and Angela Bendele, Jodye and Chuck Young, Deena and Freddy McCollum, Richard and Melissa Fohn, Mary Dorothy and Chris Paxton, Jill and Warren Beard, Roy and Jamie Wilson, Mollie and Chris Wujcik, Lynne and Ryan Almand and 27 Great-grandchildren. Irene's surviving sisters are Leona Finger, Effie Bendele, Anita Tschirhart and husband, Lloyd, and brother John Poerner and wife, JoAnn; sister-in-law, Sara Fohn; numerous nieces and nephews. The Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home will be open for visitation on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. The Holy Rosary will be recited Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, D'Hanis, immediately followed by the Mass of Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
