Obituary

James Brooks Peden, age 95, of Hondo, formerly of Austin, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010. He was born Mar. 12, 1916, in Henryetta, OK, the son of James P.erry and Jessie (McNeely) Peden. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and was stationed in India where he received the Flying Cross for his services. He spent 10 years working for newspapers in Abilene and Austin as he raised his family and went to school. He was a graduate of Hardin-Simmons University and the University of Texas Law School. He went into private practice for a while before going to work for the Texas Railroad Commission. He retired after 30 years and went back into private practice. After his 90th birthday, he retired from his law practice completely and moved to Hondo to live with his son and daughter-in-law. He was a member of the Hondo/D'Hanis Rotary Club, a 50-plus year member of the Texas Bar Association, and attended First United Methodist Church. He was a multi-faceted man of great intelligence, integrity and quick-wit. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Flossie Lee (Jackson) Peden; and five siblings. He is survived by his son, Robert James "Bob" Peden and wife Ann of Hondo; grandsons, Robert Scott Peden and wife Kari of Waco and James David Peden and wife Kim of San Antonio; and great-grandchildren, Ashley Brooks Peden, Robert Anderson Peden, David Whitley Peden and Ann Whitley Peden. Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 14, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Guinn-Horger Chapel. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 15, at First United Methodist Church, Hondo, followed by interment at Austin Memorial Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife. Pallbearers were Frank Harris, David Howard, Scott Peden, James Peden, George Lengyel and Bob Mac Peden. His great-grandchildren were honorary pallbearers. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Medina Healthcare Fund, 3100 Ave. E, Hondo 78861 or First United Methodist Church, Hondo.
