Obituary

James Daniel Schmidt of Hondo passed away peacefully at home Sunday, January 10, 2021.  He was born the son of Overton K. and Dovie Mae Schmidt, May 14, 1937.

J.D. grew up on the family farm and ranch and continued these endeavors throughout his life.  He graduated from Devine High School and later Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos with a degree in Ag Education.

J.D. married Linda Nell Haynes July 16,1965. Together they raised and supported two sons in many activities.

J.D. was an ag teacher in Yancey and Hondo for 18 years and enjoyed following his students' accomplishments throughout their lives.  He worked with and supported the Medina Co. Jr. Livestock Show for over 40 years.  He also worked for Rain and Hail Crop Insurance Service as a loss supervisor for the South Texas region.  J.D. enjoyed working on the family farm and ranch raising registered Hereford cattle and encouraged his sons' involvement in the operation over the years.

J.D. was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife Linda; brothers, Overton Jr., George and Calvin; and sister, Joyce Mollgaard.  He is survived by his sons, Robert D. Schmidt of Hondo and Larry W. Schmidt and his wife Jana and grandson, Barret of Round Mountain; brother-in-law, Dennis Mollgaard; sisters-in-law, Ruby Schmidt and Lynn Schmidt; nieces and nephews; and many good friends. J.D. was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Hondo, and the family suggests memorials be made to the church.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section, 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, officiated by Pastor J. Paul Bruhn. Masks and social distancing are required.
