Jimmy Kelly Stewart, born January 3rd, 1939, passed away on Tuesday July 4th, 2017, at Blue Skies Freedom House, San Antonio, Texas. He was 78 years old. Jimmy was the youngest son of James Stewart and Nay Gunter Stewart of Colbert, Georgia. Jimmy enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1956 in Athens, Georgia and completed Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, the same year. He met Lynette Saathoff in Bandera, Texas, and the two were married in 1960. They welcomed their first son, Dean, in 1961 and their second, James, in 1962. During his Air Force career, Jimmy worked on maintenance for U-2 spy planes at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX, and in 1966 was deployed to Ubon, Thailand. Later, Jimmy and his family were stationed in Keflavik, Iceland, where in 1973 he and Lynette welcomed Monique, the daughter they'd been hoping for. In 1978, Jimmy retired from the Air Force and purchased the Gulf Service Station in Hondo, Texas, which he built up and sold a few years later. He spent his spare time hunting and fishing with his kids (who forgot to tie up the boat a time or two) and livening up the Quihi Dance Hall. An early riser and a believer in leaving no task half-done, Jimmy instilled this same work ethic in his kids. As a team, he and Lynette worked hard to improve the properties they owned. They eventually settled down in the home they built in Quihi, where you were most likely to find him riding his tractor in the field, at times with a grandchild perched on his lap. He enjoyed having a good time (and a few beers) with his son, Dean, who shares Jimmy's love of fishing and follows in his footsteps as a business owner and mechanic. Jimmy had a soft spot for babies and puppies, and was a master at barbecuing brisket. His wry wit, infectious smile, and bear hugs will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nay Gunter Stewart; his brothers, J.C. Stewart, Robert Russell Stewart, James Donald "Don" Stewart, Roy Edgar Stewart, and Howard Junior Stewart; and his sisters, Lillian Gaynelle Peterman, Mattie Sue Prather, Francis Duckworth, and Sarah Ellen Wages. He is survived by his wife, Lynette Louise Stewart; son, Dean Edwin Stewart and his wife Cecilia Stewart of Hondo, Texas; son, James Anthony Stewart and his wife Janis Lents Stewart of Kerrville, Texas; daughter, Monique Lynn Vandewalle and her husband Andrew Vandewalle of Hondo, Texas; sister, Ruth (Bootsie) Human of Athens, Georgia; grandchildren, Gregg Gerstner, Christopher Gerstner, Kortney Gerstner, Amanda Kelly Droutsas, Tristan Edward Stewart, Elizabeth Rose Stewart, Trevor Michael Stewart, Brittany Tayler Mellon, Mackenzie Katherine Stewart, Julia Catherine Mellon, Nolan Patrick Stewart, Isaiah James Mellon, and Lauren Elise Vandewalle; great-grandchildren, Hannah Juniper Droutsas, Heidi Samantha Droutsas and Colten Dean Polk. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Quihi Bethlehem Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, Jimmy's family encourages mourners to donate to the Alzheimer's Association, the Quihi Bethlehem Lutheran Church, or the charity of their choice in Jimmy's memory.
