John Ralph Davenport peacefully passed from the presence of his family into the arms of our Lord on January 27, 2006, at the age of 87, in Leander, TX. He was born on November 17, 1918 in Hondo, Texas to John Davenport and Cordella Smith Davenport. John R. attended Thelma Grade School and was a graduate of Harlandale High School. He served his nation in her time of need during World War II at locations in New Orleans, LA, Japan, and Korea. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to his separation from the US Army. He further served his country in the capacity of civil service at Kelly Air Force Base as a Logistics Support Specialist. He continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1986. John R. married Rosa Lee Stoepler on November 17, 1940 in Concho County. They returned to the San Antonio area in 1948 and maintained a lifelong residence in the area. He was a member of the Southeast Church of Christ, and during his life served several area churches of Christ, as Elder, Deacon, and Song Director. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother William David Davenport. He is survived by Rosa Lee (Stoepler) Davenport, his wife of 65 years, and their four sons, John Wayne and wife Leah of Mineral Wells, Michael Lee and wife Elaine of Leander, James A. and wife Emma of San Antonio, Stephen and wife Terry of San Antonio, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews other relatives, a vast host of friends, and his innumerable Christian brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 30, 2006, at 1:00 PM at the Southeast Church of Christ, 5860 US Highway 87 East, San Antonio with Patrick Andrews, Minister of the Southeast Church of Christ as officiant and Gene Helm of Kerrville, TX, as director of congregational singing. The family will receive friends on January 30, 2006, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Southeast Church of Christ. Committal services will be conducted at the Hondo cemetery following funeral services.
