Col. John Peter Gibeau of San Antonio, formerly of D'Hanis and Hondo, 74, passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017. Born Jan. 1, 1943, in Adams Mass., he was the son of Alphonse Joseph and Beatrice Aglae Duchesne Gibeau. A member of the U.S. Air Force from 1961 thru 1997, John served as a helicopter medic in Vietnam. His wife, Kay, said John lived life to its fullest. Having battled cancer, his lifespan exceeded doctor's predictions by more than 20 years. An active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, he was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, SKPs, SHAPE Officers Assn., Military Officers Assn. (MOAA), Vietnam Veterans Assn., National War College Assn., Hal Jones American Legion Post, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the Commemorative Air Force Assn. and an ardent supporter of establishing a Hondo Army Air Field Museum. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Barbara Ann Gibeau O'Connor. He is survived by his wife, Catherine "Kay" Laufert Gibeau; brother-in-law, Michael O'Connor of Arvada CO; nephews, Kevin (Brenda) O'Connor of Westminister CO, Michael O'Connor of Dells WI; and Thomas O'Connor of New York NY; niece, Kathleen O'Connor (David)) Good of Arvada CO; brother-in-law. Robert Charles (Mary) Laufert and sister-in-law, Miriam Laufert, all of Baltimore MD. The Rosary will be recited 10:00 am March 8 followed by the Memorial Mass at 10:30 am both at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Inurnment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. The family suggests memorials may be made to St. John ACTS, St. John's New Hall Building Fund, or the Commemorative Air Force.
