Obituary

Jose "Kiko" Castillo Gonzales was born in Hondo, Texas, on March 19, 1937. He was called to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the age of 82. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Antonia Castillo Gonzales Valenzuela, the love of his life and wife of 57 ½ years, Martha Dominguez Gonzales who passed away on April 13th, and his brothers, Juan and Jesus Gonzales. Kiko was a very humble and hard-working man, traits instilled in him at a very young age. His love was with baseball and was known as "Kiko Curva", which means "Kiko Curveball" even though he wasn't a pitcher: he was actually known for his skills at 3rd base. He played and coached many teams throughout his life. He passed his love of baseball and sports to his children and grandchildren, who he supported by attending many of their events. But his true love was Martha, of course, whom he met working as a butcher at the Sunset Grocery Store. Kiko's dedication and love for his family continued as he worked at Exxon gas station (next to Dairy Queen), then Alamo Lumber while going back to school to attain his GED. He was a "Jack of all trades" and learned many skills: air conditioning, electrical work, refrigeration, fixing appliances, plumbing, and was just an all-around "Handy Man". He was always willing to learn new things, even using the computer! For 33 years, Kiko commuted to San Antonio where he worked and retired in Civil Service as a maintenance mechanic for Kelly, Brooks, Randolph, and Lackland Air Force Bases. Kiko is survived by his son, James (Pat) Gonzales; daughter, Deborah San Miguel; grandchildren, Sharayah Gonzales, Rey Cabrera Jr., Joseph Gonzales, Darren Gonzales and Aaron San Miguel. He is also survived by his brother, Abraham "AB" (Hope) Valenzuela and many loving nieces and nephews. Rosary was recited Sunday, May 12, at Guinn-Horger Chapel. Funeral Mass was at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 13, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment followed at Hondo Cemetery, Guadalupe Section.
