Joylene Rose
Tilley Bohmfalk
July 17, 1940 – March 11, 2026
Joylene Rose Tilley Bohmfalk, age 85, passed to eternal rest on Wednesday, Mar. 11, 2026, at her ranch home near Hondo.
Born July 17, 1940, in San Antonio, she was the daughter of Joy Langdon Tilley Jr. and Arlyne Edna Elizabeth Kern Tilley.
After living at different locations in Texas and a 2-year stay in Newport, Rhode Island where her father was stationed during World War II, Joylene's family settled in Hondo shortly after the war ended. Joylene graduated from Hondo High School, where she was a majorette in the Owl Band and lettered in Basketball all four years, was an editor for the yearbook and the Hondo Anvil Herald, Betty Crocker Homemaker of the Year, and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Sweetheart. After marrying Clyde Bohmfalk in 1959, they lived in Midland for a brief time before moving to Austin in 1964. Joylene worked at the University of Texas at Austin as the Executive Administrative Assistant to the Chairman of the Educational Psychology Department in the College of Education for 40 years. Joylene lived in Austin until 2023, when she returned to Hondo.
Joylene was an avid collector of skunk figurines, stemming from her love of skunks which began with the pet skunks she had when growing up. She enjoyed photographing, identifying, cataloging, and painting all of the various wildflowers that bloomed throughout the year at her ranch home. Joylene was a skilled writer, and published several children's stories after her retirement from UT. However, her true passion was spending time with family and friends. She was fiercely dedicated to providing a place where happy memories would be forged, whether it be on a trip with family to the beach in Port Aransas, or organizing and hosting high school class reunions, family reunions, or annual Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas family gatherings at her ranch home. She was committed to ensuring that everyone was welcomed and loved.
Joylene's children and family are thankful for the various doctors and nurses that provided care for her, including Dr. William Lewis, Dr. Sauman Rafii, Dr. Stuart Damore, and those at Peterson Regional Medical Center in Kerrville. They are also extremely grateful for the comfort and care provided by the staff and caregivers of Home Instead in Castroville, especially Brisa, who became a friend and like family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of more than 50 years, Clyde Edward Bohmfalk; and her brothers, Charles Langdon Tilley and Noel Kern Tilley.
Survivors include her daughters, Shannon McLauglin and Reagan Portillo (Chico); son, Michael Bohmfalk (Regina); grandchildren Sean (Ashley), Catie (Sam), Daniel (Julie), Breanna, Patrick (Carli), Ian (Aricka), and Ashlynn; great-grandchildren Luke, Sloane, Keegan, Kellan, Eliana, Griffin, and Oliver; and siblings, Gaye Wunsch (Ron), Kevin Bader (Fred), Tobin Tilley (Jeanette), and Ray Don Tilley (Diane); in-laws, Diana Tilley and Wilbur Bohmfalk; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 4, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., at the Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel. At 11:30 a.m., a graveside service will be held at the Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section, after which the family will host her Celebration of Life service at her ranch home in Hondo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America at 2121 K Street NW, Suite 200, Washington DC, 20037 or to the Tilley Fund to be used for educational scholarships c/o Ray Don Tilley, 125 Augusta Drive, Wimberly, TX 78676.
