Justin Paul Barcheld, Skip to all his friends, lifted off for his final flight on Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at his home in D'Hanis. He was 92. Skip was born June 29, 1924, in Pittsburgh, PA, the youngest of the six sons of Lucy (Fest) and Karl Barchfeld. Reared and educated in the city, he joined the Army upon his high school graduation and was assigned to the Seventh Army, completing basic training in Texas, where he proudly earned the Combat Infantry Badge, then was sent to France. He was wounded in battle at Mullhausen, France, which was actually the ancestral home of his parents. After recovering from his wounds, he graduated from Chicago College of Optometry, but decided he was not cut out for routine office work. Returning to Pittsburgh, he began his career in sales. On Nov. 24, 1951, he married Martha Hesse. They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this Thanksgiving. Skip eventually went to work for US Rubber and was transferred to Cheshire, Connecticut. Upon retiring in 1980, he and Martha moved to Coconut Creek FL, but Texas called and they built their log house in D'Hanis in 1984, where they have resided ever since. Along the way, they had many adventures and trips, travelling through this country, Europe and Australia. Skip was probably best known for his love of flying. He was an avid pilot, first learning to fly in 1958. He owned several different types of aircraft over the years. He also spent many years building his own Long-EZZ, which he proudly flew and displayed at the EAA convention in Oshkosh, WI. His love for flying was passed down to his sons and grandsons, all of whom are pilots. He was very active in the local chapter of Experimental Aircraft Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Skip is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Martha; their three children, Marti (Brian) Faignant of Hortonville WI, Justin P. (Ruth) Barchfeld Jr. of Barrington IL, and Col. Conrad C. "Rock" Barchfeld, USAF Retired. Also, five grandchildren, Jay (Caryn) Faignant of Rochester MN, Nikki (Rick) Gamble of McFarland WI, MaryAnne (Jason) Schwellinger of Wauwatosa WI, Jennie (Chris) Bourke of Palatine IL and Justin P. (Becca) Barchfeld III of Hoffman Estates IL; seven great-grandchildren, Gretta Faignant, Isaac Gamble, Simon Gamble, Scarlett Schwellinger, Abigal Bourke, Ben Bourke and Caroline Barchfeld. An eighth great-grandchild is expected to arrive in April 2017. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Mary Meredith of D'Hanis, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Skip was predeceased by his parents and five brothers, Frantz, Karl, Eugene, Geoffry and Pershing. Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 10, at Holy Cross Church in D'Hanis, with visitation at 9 a.m., followed by the Rosary at 9:30 and Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, D'Hanis. Skip's family suggests memorials may be made to Holy Cross Building Fund. The family will forever be grateful for the wonderful care given to Skip by River City Hospice, Jack and Marisol in particular, and health aide, Rachel, plus all of the loving support from their many friends in the D'Hanis area.
