Kathleen Johnson Finger of Hondo passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021. She was 94.
Born in Laredo, July 27, 1926, she was the daughter of Randolph Morton and Lillian Blasingame Johnson. She grew up in Edinburg, graduating from Edinburg High. At 17 she rode the bus to Denton where she attended TWU and obtained her teaching degree. It was there she met Vivian Biry (Zinsmeyer), who introduced her to her future husband, Guenther Herff "H" Finger.
A retired elementary school teacher, Kathleen instructed countless children at Hondo ISD for 30 years, and a few years in Uvalde as well. She also taught a year of Spanish at Hondo High School.
After retiring, she volunteered at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio and was awarded her 10-year pin
Kathleen sewed all her children's clothes when they were little. She enjoyed camping; crocheting; traveling to such places a Jamaica, the Grand Old Opry and Las Vegas; and New Years's Eve dinner-and-a-movie trips with friends.
A devoted Catholic, Kathleen was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She also belonged to the Huajilla Unit of the Retired Teachers Association, Hondo Garden Club and St. John's Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Guenther Herff "H" Finger; grandson, Timothy Finger; son-in-law, Samuel Bailey; and her siblings, Robert Johnson, Richard Johnson, Clarence Johnson and Alma Johnson.
Survivors include her children, Terry M. Finger of LaVernia, Caroline A. Bailey and Tina Finger, both of Hondo; grandchildren, Nicholas D. (Selica) Finger of San Antonio and Stephanie N. Mendoza of Hondo; great-grandchildren, Skyla Mendoza, Cailyn Mendoza, Darren Delgado and Natalie Finger; and sisters, Frances Niles of Kerrville and Virginia Lee Jones of Houston.
Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 29, 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel.
Rosary will be recited Friday, Jan. 29, 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:30 a.m., at the Guinn-Horger Chapel. Interment will be at Hondo Cemetery, St. John Section.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
