(Initials Only) L. A. Smith, age 94, passed away on June 2, 2005 in San Antonio. He was born on April 3, 1911, in Bibb, Texas, the son of Louis Andrew & Mamie Frances (Cathcart) Smith. He joined the Baptist Church at Center Point as a young boy. He married Vivian Paine on September 12, 1932. They moved to Hondo in 1934 where he went to work as a mechanic. Over the years he received several awards for his work for the Ford motor company. He was very active in the community. He was a past Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge, member of the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Hermann Sons Lodge, Woodman of the World, and the Quihi Gun Club. He also served on the Hondo Independent School Board. L. A. was an avid sports fan. He served as equipment manager for the Highway ninety baseball league and was a faithful follower of the Owl football team. Until recent years he never missed a game. He enjoyed watching the grandchildren as they participated in school and community sports activities. He is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Curtis Braden, his infant son, brothers George Daniel Smith, Grady Norris Smith, Brady Smith, Austin Smith, Clinton Smith; sisters Nell Smith, Hauty Smith. L. A. is survived by his wife of 72 years, Vivian (Paine) Smith of Hondo, son Robert Lewis Smith and wife Gwen of Smithville; daughters Shirley Braden of Hondo, Betty Gilliam and husband Ralph of Hondo; grandchildren Vince Gilliam and wife Rona, Andy Gilliam and wife Lori, Tim Gilliam and wife Shelley of Midland, Vicky Sablatura and husband Charles of San Antonio, Barry Braden and wife Ginny, Clay Braden and wife Mary Linda, Angela Wolff and husband Stefan, Keith Smith and wife Barbara of San Antonio, Todd Smith and wife Teri of Blanket, and Billy Smith of Medina Lake; and great grandchildren, Lisa Snell and husband Jordan of San Antonio, Tracey Williams and husband Brett of Katy, Stacy Jacobs and husband Jody, Chris Braden and wife Marissa of San Antonio, Andrew Gilliam and wife Alicia, Ashley, Brittany and Daniel Gilliam of Midland, Patton and Ellen Gilliam, Lindy and Dustin Sablatura of San Antonio, John Braden, Mallory, Hannah and Collin Braden, Shane and Alec Wolff, Eric and Tyler Smith; and great-great-grandchildren Holland Snell, Coy Jacobs and Amber Williams; other family members include brother Marshall Scott Smith of League City; sisters Annie Melissa Breiten of Hondo, Fayerne Pancratz and husband Julius of Hardin. The Visitation was from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, at the Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel and the Funeral Service, was at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, at the Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel. The Masonic casket carriers were Tim Copland, Gerard Rogers, Olen Wiemers, Bryan Hartnett, Willis Boone, James Cagle, and the Masonic Honorary casket carriers were Al Dalton, Rothe Martin, elgin Wiemers, R. M. McGuire. Masonic Services followed at the Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
