Larry James Griffin of Hondo passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at the age of 77.
Born Oct. 28, 1944, in Shelbyville, KY, he was the son of James Lee and Mary Lucille McClain Griffin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Asbil Brown; and brothers-in-law, George Richard Proctor, Richard Rohrbach, John Paul Rohrbach and Robert J. Heyen.
Larry attended elementary school in Simpsonville KY and got his GED while serving in the United States Army.
He joined the Army at age 16, after his dad signed for him. He did a tour in Vietnam as a gunner on a helicopter, and left the Army after six years as a Staff Sergeant. He was a Purple Heart recipient.
While in the Army, he was stationed in Hawaii, where he met Mary while she was visiting her sister and brother-in-law, George Richard Proctor. Both were stationed at Schofield Barracks.
He came to Texas on leave to see Mary in the summer of 1966, and again in December of 1966. They married Dec. 21, 1966. He got out of the Army in March of 1967 and they settled in Hondo.
While living in Hondo, their first child, Lance David, was born on April 17, 1969.After moving to Kentucky in 1976, their second son, Justin James, was born Sept. 15, 1978, in Louisville, Kentucky.
While living in Hondo, Larry drove a Foremost milk truck, hauled cattle for Ulbrich Truck Line, owned a service station with his friend Randy Gray, and worked for Peerless Equipment in San Antonio.
After moving to Kentucky, he worked on highway construction with his stepfather.He continued that work until they moved back to Texas in 1984, and worked in construction for a friend.
He then decided to start his own construction company, G&S Construction, and for 13 years poured foundations for KB homes. He retired in 2008.
Over the years, he enjoyed coaching Little League, playing golf, working with cattle on his ranch, dancing, bowling, and visiting with his friends at the "College of Knowledge."
Larry's greatest joy was his grandchildren, whom he supported in everything they did, especially sporting events.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Rohrbach Griffin; sons, Lance Griffin, Justin Griffin (Jennifer), all of Hondo, and Michael Griffin (Cindy); daughter, Judy Wilson (Scott), all of Shelbyville, Kentucky; grandchildren, Brooks Griffin, Daulton Griffin, Jadyn Rose Griffin, Lucas Griffin, Brendan Griffin, Josh Griffin, Jake Griffin, Zachary Wilson and Courtney Wilson Lloyd; brothers, Bobby Griffin(Katie) of Lousiville, KY, Donny Griffin, Johnny Griffin(Kathy); sister - Sandra Long(Ron), all of Shelbyville; half-brothers, Ricky, John, Virgil, Brian and Jim, all of Kentucky; sisters-in-law, Kay Rohrbach Heyen of Hondo, Gail Rohrbach of D'Hanis, and Gayle Rohrbach of Castroville.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Guinn Horger Chapel.
Rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Guinn Horger Chapel, followed by interment at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood section.
