Lendon Elmo Pope of Hondo passed away Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at the age of 83. He was born on July 4, 1922, in Campwood, Texas, the son of Emmett Green & Mary (Gray) Pope. Elmo was employeed by H.B. Zachry in the construction of the Hondo Navigation School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was comptroller at TAI, had a John Deere & Case Equipment dealership. He was member of Hondo VFD, American Legion, Hondo Athletic Booster Assoc., and the St. Vincent de Paul. Elmo was also a long time Hondo Lions Club Tail Twister. Elmo helped with the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church's Parish Prison Ministry. He is preceded in death by his parents; Beatrice Elizabeth (Lewis) Melton Pope; father-in-law George Reitzer; son-in-law David R. Schulte. He is survived by his wife, Georgia Ann (Reitzer) Mueller Pope; children, Mike and Dian Pope of Boerne, Linda Schulte of Hondo, Pat and Kathy Pope of Washington, D.C., Mitch Pope of Hondo, Dana Pope of Austin, Nancy and Branko Grootes of Nunspert, Holland, Mark and Brenda Pope of Bellville, Tina Deasey of Austin, and Stacey and Steve Henry of San Antonio; grandchildren Grady Pope and wife Brittney, Cody Pope, Megan Pope, Chris Schulte and wife Kelly, Scott Schulte and wife Betty, Emma Pope, Annie Pope, Nicolas Pope, Shellie Pope, Zane Pope, Alyssa Pope, Alec Pope, Mariska Grootes, Maartje Grootes, Vanessa Deasey, Luke Deasey, Teresa Deasey, Matt Deasey, Drew Henry, Devin Henry; and great-grandchildren Ryan Schulte, Austyn Schulte, Larkin Pope; stepchildren, Marcy and Rick Tondre of Castroville, Steve and Kim Mueller, Rebecca and Mike Hackebeil, John and Patsy Melton, Sandy and Richard Schweers, all of Hondo, and James Melton of San Antonio; 13 step-grandchildren Allison Tondre, Nathan Tondre, Chris Mueller, Scott Mueller, Landyn Hackebeil, Elliott Hackebeil, Jason Melton and wife Jana, Jenn Trapp and husband Ken, Jill Melton, Ashley Melton, Mason Melton, Renae Schweers, Jacob Schweers and 3 step-great-grandchildren Madelayne Melton, Hunter Melton, Lauren Trapp; brother Robert Glen Pope and wife Barbara of Hondo; mother-in-law Anna may Reitzer; brother-in-law Tom Reitzer. The Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, Sept. 3, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hondo. Interment will follow in Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
