Obituary

Lucille Vernell Wiemers Rhome of Hondo/Yancey passed away Thursday, Apr. 9, 2020. She was 86.

Born Nov. 12, 1933, in Yancey, she was the daughter of Alfred B. and Corine Faseler Wiemers.

Lucille graduated from Yancey High School. She married John Dean Hawes and, while he served in the U.S. Coast Guard, they lived in Freeport and in Connecticut.Later they returned to Texas and owned a hog farm in Lytle. She lived in Sandy Hill, PA, with her second husband, Marion Rhome, and returned to Yancey to raise cows after his passing. Over the years, she traveled to many states with her church congregation friends. She loved her garden and her favorite passtime was picking up rocks on her farm. She was known for raising luscious tomatoes and making delicious sweet ice tea.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Ethel Wiemers Small.

Survivors include her children, Dwain Hawes (Helen) of Rio Medina, Dixie Stasney (Robert) of Seguin and Darryl Hawes of Yancey; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Jonell Wiemers Taylor of Hondo/Yancey.

A private, graveside service was held Tuesday, Apr. 14, at Yancey Cemetery.
