Obituary

Lucy Justine Davis, age 100 years, one month and seven days, joined her eternal family on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, leaving from the same room in which she entered this world. Born in Hondo on Sunday, Aug. 16, 1914, she was the daughter of Fletcher and Roberta Hopp Davis, former owners of the Hondo Anvil Herald. She will be missed by extended family and a host of friends and former students, as witnessed at her 100th birthday party. Lucy, a shy little girl who hid behind her mother's long skirts, apparently learned from her mother's outgoing example and grew into a confident young woman who took on many responsibilities and challenges throughout her life. A graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University with journalism and home economics degrees, she dreamed of being editor of the Ladies Home Journal food pages, but she took a fourth and fifth grade teaching job in Runge. Three years later, she decided she liked teaching and earned a Smith-Hughes teaching certificate from A&I at Kingsville which qualified her to teach home economics. She taught the many topics related to home management in Nordheim for 11 years and for 29 years in Sinton. She instituted the first all-boys homemaking class and assisted in setting up similar classes in other South Texas Schools. Never having married, she, nontheless, became a mother figure to thousands of students throughout her 43-year teaching career and was honored by the Sinton Enterpise with a "Mother of the Year" award in 1975. Some of her students continued to keep in touch and even traveled from around the state to celebrate her 100th birthday. After retiring from teaching in 1978, she returned to the home she grew up in and shared with her sister until Anne died in 2003. A member of Castro Colonies Heritage Association, Lucy became active in local historical research and was an editor of the Medina County History Vol. I and several other publications. She was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and St. John's Historical Association. She and Anne were recipients of the Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce Cornerstone Award, honoring their many contributions to the community over the years. The Davis children donated the family's extensive Texana collection to the Hondo Public Library in memory of their parents. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Mary Octavia "Dutzie" Davis, Francis Marion "Brother" Davis Sr., and Anne Elizabeth Davis. Survivors are her great-nieces and -nephews. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 26, 6 to 8 p.m., at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel in Hondo. Rosary, followed by the Funeral Mass, will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 27, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. Memorials may be made to the Hondo Public Library Fletcher and Roberta Hopp Davis Texana Room, St. John's Historical Society or the charity of your choice.
