Lula Adair (Bennett) Barber, age 89, of Hondo, formerly of Freeport, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010. Born Apr. 21, 1921, in Cuero, she was the daughter of James Preston and Emma Kate (Williams) Bennett. She grew up in Cuero, moved to Freeport in 1943, raised her four children there, and was a houseparent at the childrens' home for about 10 years. She was strong in her faith and church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ferdie Lee Derwood Barber; son-in-law, Clyde Modgling; and brothers, Irvin Bennett and Gilbert Bennett. Survivors include her daughters, Carolyn Jeannette Modgling of Hondo, Andrea Elaine Kelley and husband David of Lake Jackson, and LeVana Kay Brooks and husband Ben of New Braunfels; son, Freddie Barber and wife Jennifer of Lake Jackson; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Evelyn Bilbrey of Cuero and Jean Cason of Anderson SC; and brother, Buddy Bennett of Normage, TX. Funeral service was held Sunday, June 27, 3 p.m., at First Baptist Church in Cuero, followed by interment in Taylor Cemetery, Cuero. Pallbearers were Matt Brooks, Jody Everett, Clint Modgling, Clay Modgling, Tim Dickenson and Rock Hanson.
