Luther Russell "Rusty" Attaway, Jr., age 56, of San Antonio, passed away on March 24, 2005, from respiratory failure due to pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Kingsville, Texas, on August 1, 1948, son of the late Luther Russell Attaway and Mamyedel Rieber Schneider. Survivors include wife of 34 years, Judy Weynand Attaway, son Captain Lance Russell Attaway, USMC, and wife Anita, of San Clemente, CA; daughter Mardy Attaway Stuman, husband Scot and granddaughter Allie Nicole, all of San Antonio. Survivors also include his mother and stepfather Mamydedel and Andrew Schneider of D'Hanis, sister Brenda Riegel and husband Carl of San Antonio, brother Thomas Attaway and wife Dorothy of D'Hanis, sister Barbara Attaway of D'Hanis, and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. His father, infant son, and nephew Travis Wayne Attaway preceded him in death. Rusty was employed by SimplexGrinnel and had worked in the fire protection industry in San Antonio for 38 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 27, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church at 700 Dewhurst in San Antonio. A rosary prayer service will be held immediately following. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 28 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in D'Hanis. Reverends Michael O'Gorman and Wallis Stiles presiding. The pallbearers were Carl Riegel, Troy Riegel, Wayne Huser, Walt Rothe, Dennis Herrmann, Dwight Green, Bob Martin, Joe Bond. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family extends their love and gratitude to their family and friends and to the doctors and nurses in the ICU units at Methodist Hospital. A contribution in Rusty's name may be made to the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio.
