Maria O. (Cardenas) Gauna, age 90, of Hondo passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013. Born in Hondo, July 21, 1923, she was the daughter of Jose and Juanita (Ortiz) Cardenas. She was a homemaker. Maria was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Abelino Gauna; daughter, Maria Elena Garza; granddaughter, Dahlia Moncada; and siblings, David Cardenas, Angelita DeLeon, Sapopa Lopez, Isabel Lopez and Elvira Bermea. Survivors include her sons, Gilberto Gauna and wife Corina of Yancey, Jose Gauna and wife Yolanda of San Antonio, Mario Gauna and Elias Gauna and wife Ana Velia, all of Hondo; daughters, Janie Strickland and Rosa Linda Johnston and husband Terry, all of Hondo; 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; brothers, Gustavo Cardenas and wife Maria of Hondo, Juan Cardenas and Jesse Cardenas and wife Socorro, all of Bandera; and sisters, Grace Romero of Blanco and Ofelia Lopez and husband Manuel. all of Hondo. Visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 5 , 6 to 8 p.m., with Rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be held Wednesday, Aug. 7, 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, followed by interment at Yancey Cemetery.
