Martha Carol Gilbert Calkins of Hondo, 92, passed away quietly Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. Carol was born on Christmas Day 1925 in Amarillo, Texas. She attended high school in San Francisco CA. As an Air Force wife, she lived in Pensacola FL and Lake Charles LA before settling permanently in Hondo in 1961. She raised three sons in Hondo and, when she wasn't reading, she was working as an assistant in Dr. John Jennings' optometrist office. She served on the Hondo Library Board and the Building Committee of First United Methodist Church in Hondo. She always had a snappy comeback for patrons and staff at Hermann Sons Steak House where she enjoyed spending time with her best friends. She will be missed. Carol is preceded in death by her mother, Martha S. Gilbert; father, Howard S. Gilbert; uncle, Charlie A. Gilbert; brother, Howard S. Bud Gilbert; husband, Pete C. Calkins; and nieces, Martha Gilbert and Cathy Gilbert. Surviving are her sons, Fred "Gib", Cary and Dan Calkins; two grandsons, Charlie and Michael Calkins; cousin, Bobbie Yoes of Kerrville; and nieces, Ginger Gilbert Gurganus of Vanceboro NC and Mary Gilbert of Helotes. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14, at First United Methodist Church of Hondo. The family suggests memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Hondo.
