Obituary

Martha C. Moore Callaway McTaggart passed from this worldly life Feb. 27, 2018. Martha was born to Curtis and Nellie Moore in Poteau, OK, May 14, 1925. The family moved to Texas when she was a small girl. Martha grew up in Malakoff, and married J. E. Marlow Callaway Aug. 22, 1942. They resided in several cities in Texas over the next 55 years, raising their family in the Irving and Euless areas. The couple retired to their farm in Crossroads. Martha was widowed Nov. 17, 1997. Martha would move to Richardson where she met and married James L. McTaggart Aug. 5, 2000. They settled in Hondo, where they both became active in the First United Methodist Church of Hondo and the Medina County Meals On Wheels. James and Martha were married for 17 years. She was devoted to caring for James through his illness the last five years. He passed away Nov. 15, 2017. Martha spent her whole life actively serving others through her involvement in her churches and Eastern Star. She served as a Stephens Minister, lay leader and sang in the choir. An Endowed, 60-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she served as Worthy Matron in Irving Chapter #777 and Hondo Chapter #404. Martha also served as Star Points in Malakoff Chapter #1012, Athens Chapter #177, and Uvalde Chapter #297. Many will remember her along with the late Renie Schulte as the two zany characters in skits performed at the Women in Touch luncheons at FUMC in Hondo. An active senior citizen, Martha worked with Meals On Wheels, volunteering until her diagnosis in January 2018. Throughout her life, Martha was a kind, gracious, loving women who loved her family and many friends from church, Meals on Wheels, OES, but most of all, she loved her God. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; sisters, Jewel Keys Palmer and Doris Avery; brother, Amon Moore; and grandson, Vincent Hoelting. She is survived by her son, Michael (Jean) Callaway; daughter, Marsha (Lloyd) Hoelting; brother, Thad (Tana) Moore; 11 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation at 10 a.m. Sat., March 3, precedes the 11 a.m. funeral service at First United Methodist Church in Crossroads, TX. Interment will follow at Patterson Cemetery. Memorial service in Hondo will be 11 a.m. next Sat., March 10, at First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Hondo, 1008 16th Street, Hondo, TX 78861 or Medina Senior Center (Meals On Wheels), 808A Harper, Hondo, TX 78861.
