Mary Ann
Boehle Hartmann
February 23, 1932 – January 19, 2023
Mary Ann Boehle Hartmann went to her heavenly home on January 19, 2023, at the age of 90 years, 11 months. She was born February 23, 1932 in Hondo, the only child of Frank Robert and Amanda Grell Boehle of Quihi. Mary Ann was baptized, confirmed, and married at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Quihi. She attended grammar school in a two-room schoolhouse in New Fountain, and graduated from Hondo High School in 1950.
On November 10, 1956 she married Harold Hartmann and they were blessed with 57 years of marriage and two children, Diane and David. God and family were central to Mary Ann and Harold's lives and family. Mary Ann was involved in many capacities at St. Paul Lutheran Church over the years, including Vacation Bible School, Worship & Music Committee, Women of St. Paul (Mary Circle), and bereavement committee team leader. Probably her favorite area of service was as one of the Monday Morning Money Counters, to which she was diligently committed for many years and served until just a few months before her death when her vision no longer allowed her to participate.
After high school graduation, Mary Ann worked in the Medina County Tax Assessor-Collector's office for about a year and a half. When the Hondo Air Base Federal Credit Union was formed in 1952, Mary Ann became its first bookkeeper and Assistant Treasurer. She resigned from the Credit Union in 1957 to become a full-time homemaker and mother. In 1966, Mary Ann began working at the Hondo High School library as the Library Aide. She worked there for 30 years, and loved getting to know the many students who came through the school. She continued to enjoy being greeted by former students around town in the years that followed.
Mary Ann was happiest when she was serving her family. Her high school homemaking class teacher inspired in her a lifelong love of sewing and cooking. When Diane was a child, Mary Ann sewed many beautiful and elaborate dresses for her by copying pictures in advertisements. Mary Ann's cooking was famous among all who were fortunate to eat at her table. In particular, her mashed potatoes, pancakes, chocolate cake, and iced tea will not be forgotten.
Mary Ann and Harold shared a love of travel. When Diane and David were growing up, each summer they would load up the family car for a two-week road trip vacation to many different parts of the U.S. After their children left home, they continued to travel extensively in the U.S. (the only state Mary Ann never visited was Delaware) and more than 30 countries abroad. They especially loved cruising, using it as their base from which to reach numerous exciting destinations.
After retirement Mary Ann joined a quilting group at St. Paul whose purpose is to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. These quilts are made entirely from donated fabric and are sent to areas of need around the world. Mary Ann experienced great fulfillment by combining her love of sewing with her desire to serve others. Her fellow quilters became her best friends and support group in her final years.
Throughout her life Mary Ann wholeheartedly believed in the power of prayer. In her later years when she had more time, she began every day with an hour or more of specific prayer for each member of her family and for others with special needs. What a priceless blessing it has been to be upheld in prayer by such a faithful Christian woman!
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, and her son-in-law James (Jim) Cooper. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Hartmann Cooper, and her son, David Hartmann and his wife Laura; four grandchildren, Brian Cooper and his wife Jessica, Kristin Cooper, Amanda Hartmann, and Matthew Hartmann; and three great-grandchildren, Annalese, Madelyn, and Patrick Cooper.
