Maria Elena Carabajal of Hondo passed away Sunday, Apr. 3, 2016, in San Antonio. She was 81. Born in Mexico, Aug. 20, 1934, she was the daughter of Nicolas and Refugia Martinez Morales. Over the last few years, Maria was able to travel the country and kept dear to her heart the hobbies of gardening and sewing and, most importantly, her family. Maria was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Maria Louisa Ortega; and brothers, Juan Morales and Vicente Morales. Survivors include her daughters, Juanita C. Helvey of Hondo, Suzanne C. Johnson of Cedar Park, Mary E. Carabajal of San Antonio, Norma C. Essary of Lakeway and Annette C. Yates of Houston; grandchildren, Lauren Helvey (Bradley) Jemelka of Yoakum, Jordan Carabajal-Johnson of Goodyear AZ, Aaron Carabajal-Johnson of Austin, Morgan Essary, Nicolette Essary, both of Lakeway, Jude Yates and Ethan Yates, both of Houston; and great-grandchildren, Kase, Kanton and Kallen Jemelka. Visitation will be Thursday, Apr. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel, with a Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Friday, Apr. 8, 11 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
