MaryAnn (Riff) Hermes, born in Dunlay Feb. 12, 1927, to Ed and Ida (Brucks) Riff, died Mar. 13, 2008, in Hondo at the age of 81. She married Lloyd Hermes on Aug. 23, 1945. They lived in Hondo, where she worked at the Medina County Tax Office, then as a teacher's aid and later as secretary to the McDowell Middle School principal. She retired in 1990. MaryAnn belonged to St. John's Catholic Church and was active in the Altar Society, Martha Club and St. John's Historical Society. She was also a member of Medina Community Hospital Auxiliary, Hondo AARP, Castro Colonies Heritage Association, Hermann Sons, and VFW Auxiliary. MaryAnn was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Erwin Riff; and husband, Lloyd; brothers-in-law, Clyde Hermes and L. H. Dean; and sisters-in-law, Violet and husband Wilford McGarvin and Lorene and husband Chester Balzen. She is survived by her daughter, Karen and husband Dean Zinsmeyer of D'Hanis; sons, Glenn Hermes of D'Hanis and Russell and wife Sharlene Hermes of Castroville; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Rena Riff of Knippa, Leora Dean of Cedar Park, Dorothy and husband John Reimer of Pearland; brothers-in-law, Hubert and wife Bernice Hermes of Hondo and LeRoy and wife Selma Hermes of San Antonio; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Rosary was held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 17, followed by Mass at 10 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Fr. Ken Dakin officiated. Interment was at Hondo Cemetery, St. John's Section. Pallbearers were J. L. Zins-meyer, Jessie Hermes, Noah Hermes, Matt Tacker, Larry Hermes and Kenny Adlong. Memorials may be given to the charity of one's choice.
