Mary Lois Laughinghouse

Mary Lois Langfeld Laughinghouse passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at the age of 88.

She was born in Hondo on May 5, 1938, the daughter of Charles Barrett and Marcella Johanna Ney Langfeld. Mary graduated from D’Hanis High School in May 1956 and married William Louis “Bill” Laughinghouse on August 31, 1957.

Mary started her professional career in D’Hanis as a telephone operator and then worked for Chapman Grain. She later worked for Medina Savings where she became well acquainted with the title business. In 1977, she went to work for Medina County Abstract and became a partner in 1982. She remained with the company after its sale to Stewart Title and finished her career in March 2004. Mary was instrumental in the growth of Medina County for 27 years.

Mary supported the Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce, the Wild Game Dinner and St. John’s Catholic Church. She loved to help with the annual St. John’s picnic at the Hondo City Park. She also served on the Board of Directors of D’Hanis State Bank. One of her defining achievements was helping to establish West Medina Water Supply Corporation in 1984. To date, West Medina continues to thrive, making water available to many residents in this area.

After retiring, Mary enjoyed her garden, tending her beautiful roses and making hot sauce and pickles to share with family and friends. She loved hosting her extended family for holiday celebrations. She also loved helping with family weddings and her signature ivy identified that she had helped with these special occasions.

Her greatest love was for her family. She attended many a sporting event for her children and grandchildren. She was their biggest cheerleader! Being “Nana” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be Mary’s greatest legacy. She taught them how to love their families and they never left without her saying “Nana Loves You”!

Mary is survived by her children, Theresa Sweeney and husband Craig, Bubba Laughinghouse and wife Stephanie, Laurie Tondre and husband Chuck, and Mary Mangold and husband David; her grandchildren, Oliver Sweeney, Chris Laughinghouse and wife Allison, Megan Favor and husband Wesley, Cody Tondre and wife Jennifer, Jordan Tondre, Trevor Mangold and wife Kortni and Jillian Petty and husband Quinn; her great-grandchildren, Millie and Miles Laughinghouse, Emily, Whitt and Vale Favor, Riley, Cooper and Landry Tondre, Rae, Warner, Gwyn and Ava Mangold, and Scottie and Hallie Petty. She is also survived by her sister Ellen Ayers, her sister Carmen Polhemus and husband Paul, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, her sister Ann Sigler, her brother Tony Langfeld, her brother Joe Langfeld and sister-in-law Joan, and sister-in-law Mogie Boon and husband John.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday, July 17, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, followed by recitation of the Rosary at 9:30, Funeral Mass at 10:00. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery will be at a later date.
