Mary Jane McClaugherty Marrs, age 92, of Hondo passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012. Born Oct. 1, 1920, in Yancey, she was the daughter of Walter Tom and Melvina (Newton) McClaugherty. A teacher and librarian for 59 years, her devotion to education and reading made her the driving force behind organizing and establishing the first Hondo Public Library in the 1970s. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil Douglas Marrs Jr.; and sister, Florence McClaugherty. She is survived by her sons, Cecil Douglas Marrs III and wife Claudette of Debary FL and Tom Marrs of Hondo; daughter, Dayle Gullion and husband Ronnie of New Braunfels; sister, Aileen Ross of Houston; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Griff T. Ross Jr of Austin. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Guinn-Horger Chapel and from 9 a.m. until service time at the First United Methodist Church on Monday, Oct. 22. Funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, followed by interment in Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
