Obituary

Maria de Jesus Herrera Urrutia of Hondo, 87, passed away Tuesday, Apr. 4, 2017. Born Aug. 24, 1929, in Hondo, she was the daughter of Victor and Teresa Salinas Herrera. A Hondo High School graduate, Mary became a fixture in Hondo retail, greeting customers with a friendly smile at Hondo Dry Goods, Palle's, Fly Drug, Windrow Rexall Drug and Peden Drug until her retirement. Mary's artistic abilities were showcased throughout Hondo in murals on store windows, graduation cutout figures, nativity scenes and Halloween decorations. She also embroidered altar linens, quilted, and painted many religious paintings, ballerinas and outdoor scenes. She was a member of the Guadalupana Society and enjoyed participating in many religious dramas. In her younger years, she was an avid cowgirl and trick rider and loved dancing. Always a positive influence to those around her, she would light up a room with her uplifting spirit. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Guadalupe Palacios and Janie Campos; and nephews, Lupe John "Kue" Palacios and Victor Manuel "Taco" Palacios. Survivors include her son, Joe (Adela) Urrutia of Hondo; grandchildren, Annabelle, Daniel and Amanda; nieces and nephews she helped raise after the death of her 32-year-old sister, Guadalupe: Adelaida Bedelia Gonzales of The Colony, Celinda (Tony) Santos of Alvin, Diama (Richard) Hernandez, Esmeralda (Arnulfo) Rodriguez and Esperanza Rodriguez, all of Hondo, and Antonio (Oralia) Palacios Jr. and Richard (Mary) Palacios, all of Houston.
