Obituary

Maurice Joseph "Metz" Zerr, the son of Gertrude M. Koch and Robert J. Zerr was born on November 19, 1925. As a child, he attended St. John's the Evangelist Catholic School and then Hondo High School. Metz began his college career at Texas A&M University. He was sent to the University of New Mexico and Notre Dame for officer training school. After being commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy, Metz spent two years in the service of his country. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Junior Grade and soon after completed his bachelor's degree at A & M. Metz graduated as a proud member of Fighting Texas Aggie Class of 1948. He later earned his master's degree in Education from Our Lady of the Lake University. Metz worked for D'Hanis Independent School District for 32 years as a teacher and administrator. His years as a mentor at DISD were an extremely meaningful and rewarding experience for him. In addition to his responsibilities at the school, Metz was extremely active in the community. He served as President of several organizations including St. John's Parish council, Hondo Volunteer Fire Department and D'Hanis Lion's club. Additionally, he served as Commander of the VFW and coached little league baseball. Metz was a life-time member of St. John's Catholic Church where he also taught CCD. His faith and affiliation with the church was always a very important aspect of his life. Metz married Betty J. Dean in May of 1950. They had 2 daughters, Judy and Ginny. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Dorothy and her husband Jack Mullen; brothers, Tony, John, Bob and his wife, Gwen; and a very special nephew, Pat Mullen. Metz is survived by his wife of 58 years; daughters, Judy Whitwell and husband Gordon; Ginny Braden and her husband Barry; and 4 grandsons, Adam Beesley of Los Angeles, CA, Greg Whitwell of Avondale, AZ, Chris Braden and his wife Marissa of Hondo, TX and John Braden of Bay City, TX. There will be a Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on June 16th. The Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John the Evangelsit Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Hondo Cemetery, St. John's Section. Metz will be forever in the hearts of the people whose lives he touched.
