Thanksgiving Dinner in Heaven will be a lot finer this year with the arrival of Michele Louise Mullen on October 19, 2008 at age 60. Michele was preceded in death by her parents, John (Jack) Mullen and Dorothy Zerr Mullen, as well as, her brother, Dennis Patrick (Pat) Mullen. She is survived by her sister, Mary Margaret Barna of Springfield, VA with husband, Ted, Jim Mullen of Hondo with wife, Eileen, Robert John Mullen of San Antonio with wife, Melissa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Michele was born on November 28, 1947 in San Antonio and attended St. Gregory the Great Catholic School and Ursuline Academy. Her early work included an apprenticeship at the well-known Mrs. Schniders' Bakery under the tutelage of Mr. Herbert Copper, where she learned the finer points of cake decorating. Expanding on those skills, Michele worked for Albertson's, Haby's Bakery in Castroville, and the Wal-Mart in Hondo. Michele loved fishing, Sam's Town in Las Vegas, and her animals. She seemed to collect homeless strays, lavishing love, treats, and animated conversation upon them. She is perhaps best remembered as a cook and memories of her magnificent dinners will remain with us all; in our heart and around the waist. Always the optimist, always the care-giver, Michele had a sunny personality that would brighten up a room and made everyone who came in contact with her not only a friend but a better person. As a devout Catholic, there is no doubt she entered Heaven via the "express" lane. The family would like to extend our deep appreciation to the staff at the Medina Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center for their excellent care of our sister. Michele was a victim of cervical cancer and true to form, even when dying she thought of others, asking that we remind everyone to get checked often for this silent killer. A Memorial Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in her honor at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 31, 2008 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in San Antonio. A private interment will held at a later date.
