Obituary

Nuel Randolph "Jack" Highsmith, age 89, of Hondo passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012. Born Oct. 26, 1922, in Spicewood, he was the son of John Franklin and Effie Laura (Butts) Highsmith. Jack attended school in Yancey through the 7th grade and then went to work on the family farm. He served in the Army in WWII and later worked at the Hondo Air Base Fire Dept. His working life also included being a ranch hand at Campbellton and at the Strauss Medina Ranch in Luckenbach, working at the T. J. Moore Lumber Yard in Ingram, and driving a truck. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dene Highsmith; daughter, Mary Judith H. Klauer; sister, Effie Lee Highsmith; and brothers, Lindsey, Bill, Milton, Leo, Johnny and Dooley. He is survived by his companion of 20 years, Louise Carr; sons, David Highsmith and wife Rachel of San Antonio and Steven Patrick Highsmith and wife Bonnie of Hondo; daughter, Joan Dever and husband Kenneth of Castroville; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Agnes Faye Reavis; and stepchildren, Guy, Brenda, Linda, Jay and Roxanne. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Guinn-Horger Chapel. Private interment will be at a later date. The family suggests memorials may be made to Community EMS, 3006 Ave. G, Hondo TX 78861.
