Obituary

Having reached the venerable age of 107 years, Oklahoma Smoyer, of Castroville, passed away in Hondo on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.

Born June 29, 1917, in Indian Territory of Gore, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of William and Mary Benge Choate, and a member of the Cherokee Tribe.

Oklahoma moved to Texas in 1953.  Shortly thereafter she went to work at the San Antonio State Hospital and later retired after 25 years.

Oklahoma was recently inducted into the Centenarians of Oklahoma Hall of Fame and her records will be filed at the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Daniel F. Smoyer; sons, William, Carl and Jack Smoyer; brothers, Charles Choate, Bill Choate, James Durward Choate, Emmitt Choate, Sequoyah Choate; and sisters, Velma Choate, Gladys Young and Juanita Capehart.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy J. Baeza and Mary Sue Hines, 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is to be held by the family.  Any floral memorials may be made in memory of Oklahoma and sent to the Community Care Center, Hondo, Texas.
