Obituary

Olivia Ann "O.A." Bernsen of Quihi passed away  May 10, 2022.

She was born November 9, 1942 in Center, Texas to Thomas and Blanche Hill. "O.A.", as she was known, grew up in San Antonio, Pasadena and Houston, Texas.

She moved to San Antonio where she met Bernard "Bernie" Bernsen when they ran against each other for a political party office in 1964. Olivia won. Bernie took her to dinner to congratulate her and they were married later that year.

After graduating from Our Lady of the Lake University, Olivia worked as a teacher for nearly 40 years, dividing her time between Northside ISD and Medina Valley ISD. For most of that time, she taught special education. Thousands of children were shaped by her loving, patient and nurturing hand over the course of the years. She earned a Masters Degree in education from Sul Ross State University in 1990.

Olivia and Bernie bought a farm near Quihi in 1976, where they raised four children on 90 acres. Olivia loved her farm, her chickens and her vegetable garden. She enjoyed traveling with Bernie and the children. She traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Turkey, Peru, Belgium, British Columbia, Baja California and France. She hosted two foreign exchange students from Belgium and remained close to them and to their families.

Olivia was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie Bernsen; son, Raymond Lloyd Bernsen; and brother, Tom Hill.

She is survived by three children, Christine (Charles) Bloemsma of Austin, John Bernsen of Quihi and James (Stephanie) Bernsen of Taylor; four grandchildren, Rebecca Bernsen, Sanne Bloemsma, Abigail Bernsen and Diego Bernsen; sisters, Mary (Robert) Rollfing of Buda and Martha (Martin) Duncan of Kingston, Ontario; brother, Michael (Annette) Hill of Pearland; and sister-in-law, Patricia Hill of San Antonio.
