Obituary

Oscar B. Herrera, Sr., age  99, formerly of Hondo, passed away Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, in San Antonio.

Born Sept. 2, 1926, in Hondo, he was the son of Jesus and Herminia Barrios Herrera.

Oscar began his career at Alamo Barber College in San Antonio and became a licensed barber.   He met the love of his life, Rosa Amalia Saathoff, during this time.  As Oscar was establishing himself in the workplace, he worked at Universal Rundle during the day, and then worked at his barbership in the evening for many years.

Oscar was a true sports fanatic.  He loved "his" Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees.  He enjoyed sports triivia and could answer any question you asked about any sports figure or team. Oscar also enjoyed playing golf with his sons and traveling to tournaments.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosa; daughters, Doris Jean Herrera and Patricia Sue Herrera; son, Theodore "Ted" Herrera; brothers, Paul, Herbert, Edmundo and Albert Herrera; sister, Herminia Gonzales, and two infant sisters.

He is survived by his sons, Oscar Herrera, Jr. (Belia) and Stanley Herrera (Ruth E.); daughters, Rose Ann Cantu (Sig) and Deborah Garcia (Galo); 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Carlos Herrera (Carmen); sisters, Mary Puckett (John) and Diane Holly.

Oscar is also survived by his second family, the staff at Silver Creek Manor Skilled Nursing Facility, where he lived the last nine years of his life.  Thank you, Daniella Suarez, Administrator, and staff, for the care and love you gave to our father.

Visitation at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel will be Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m. and interment at Hondo Cemetery Guadalupe Section.
