Obituary

Ottalie May Goldapp Schmidt of Hondo passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022, at the age of 91.

Born May 7, 1930, in Alice TX, she was the daughter of Otto and Alma Martens Goldapp.

She attended Alice schools and later graduated from Texas Lutheran College (now TLU) in Seguin. It was during this time that she met Chester R. Schmidt and they later married on Oct. 26,1952. This union was blessed with two children, Louis and Carol.

After moving to Hondo, Ottalie became a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, was very active in the church, and for many years played the organ for Sunday services and other services when needed. She taught Sunday School, helped with Vacation Bible School, was an active member of several Bible studies, a member of Women of the Church, and helped with one of the ladies' quilting groups. She made sure her children were involved in church activities and always encouraged them in their faith. She lived a life of loving one another and encouraged her family to do the same. She wanted everyone to know that she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and felt assured of her salvation. Her hope was that everyone would have a personal relationship with Jesus and know Him as their Lord and Savior.

Ottalie enjoyed family gatherings, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanksgiving at the ranch always included family, food and fun. She would open their home at Christmas for neighbors and friends to come and celebrate. There was always an abundance of food to be shared. Everyone enjoyed her Christmas cookies. The recipe and style of decorating them has been shared to multiple generations.

Her children agreed that "the ranch was always a big part of Mom and Dad's life. Mom helped Dad with the cattle and enjoyed hunting, watching the wildlife and sitting around a campfire."

Ottalie was preceded in death by parents; husband, Chester R. Schmidt; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Alvin Goldapp (Kathleen) and Edwin Goldapp (Katherine).

Survivors include her son, Louis Otto Schmidt (Carol Sue) of Yancey; daughter, Carol S. Mangold (Dickie) of LaCoste; granddaughters, Cora Beth Schmidt and Margaret Schmidt; sister, Edith Burris (John) of Alice; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Lanham Mangold (Marla), Leyton Mangold (Michele), Richelle Mangold, Tricia Chatham (Stephen); nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Tuesday, Feb. 1, 5 to 7 p.m., at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral service was Wednesday, Feb. 2, 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hondo, followed by interment at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
