On Oct. 31, 2018, God welcomed another angel, Patricia Jean Hardt Grunewald of Yancey, age 83. She was born May 14, 1935, in Detroit, MI, to Margaret Lally, and then adopted by Emil Fred (Jack) and Bess Hardt and later by Jack,s second wife, Georgia Eva Snyder Walker Hardt. Pat entered the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and received an honorable discharge in 1957. She married James Grunewald on Dec. 23, 1961. She worked at Red & White Grocery, Hondo Anvil Herald, Yancey School and later as a physical education coach at Lacy, McDowell, Hondo High and Meyer Elementary before retiring to care for her husband and parents. It always made her day when she was greeted by generations of her former students as Ms. Pat or Coach Pat. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; brother, Ted (Jeri) Walker; sister-in-law, Ethel (Phil) Reid; brothers-in-law, George Grunewald, Roy (Ruth) Grunewald and Vernon (Edna Lee) Grunewald; special family friend, Cassandra Santos; and her very dear friend of 60+ years, Mary Ellen Coons. She is survived by her daughters, Denise Grunewald and Carla Grunewald (Clayborne) Boehle, all of Hondo. Grandchildren are Cindy (Kevin) Langley, Connie Boehme, Chuck (Bryna) Boehle. Great-grandchildren include Josh (Amanda) Boehle, Ashley (Derek) Bell, Jacob Boehme, Karlee Boehme, Lena Boehle, Jessica Langley, Lance Syma and girlfriend Sadie Guerra. Great-great-grandchildren are Kyler Booher, Jazlyn Zepeda, Stetson Samora and Tinley Samora. Her cousins include Phoebe Hardt Rogers (FC), Margaret Hardt Taylor, and Jim (Fay) Snyder and she has numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed by those she considered family, Henry Santos Jr., his wife Marinda and children, Christen and Jarrett (Amilee) Santos and their daughter, Adeline; by her many friends; her faithful four-legged companion, Scooter; and her granddog, Priscilla. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, 2 p.m., at the Yancey United Methodist Church in Yancey. The family suggests memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
