Obituary

Phyllis Jean Viola Bandy Mangold peacefully passed away at home on May 27, 2017. Phyllis, a resident of Hondo and D'Hanis, TX was born November 22, 1929, and raised in Abilene, KS, the only child of Albert.E. "Tootie" Viola and Mildred M. Boyd. After what was described as an exuberant childhood during which she developed a love of animals, Phyllis met a young engineering student from Lincoln, NE, by the name of Dale E. Bandy. They courted and fell in love, and married on March 17, 1951. They spent the next 30 years together, raising a family and starting a second business - that of raising greyhounds for racing. Phyllis' love of animals played a large part in the greyhound venture, which extended well after the unfortunate divorce of Phyllis and Dale in 1981. Phyllis was soon remarried, to a retired U.S. Air Force colonel by the name of Leon Mangold, a resident of Hondo, who served as Medina County Tax Assessor/Collector. She made many friends while working as a hairdresser in Hondo. She continued to raise and train greyhounds until Leon's death in 2000. She will be remembered for her love of life, travel, shopping and family. She had impeccable style and grace. She loved to smile, laugh and loved to be around people. She was the last of the "Golden Girls" (Barbara Pope, Cricket Amberson and Malford Coyle) and missed their yearly beach excursions and card games! Phyllis is survived by her son, Skip D. Bandy (and Sallia), of Georgetown, TX; daughter, Stephanie G. Laughinghouse (and Bubba) of D'Hanis; and stepdaughter, Laura Grunewald of Victoria. She is also survived by her grandchildren, whom she loved very much, Christopher P. Laughinghouse and Dr. Megan L. Favor (Wesley), all of Hondo; Brandon Grunewald of Austin and Amber Grunewald of Dallas. As she journeys to the arms of the Lord and the many friends and family who have preceded her, family and friends will celebrate her life during a visitation on Tuesday, May 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Diabetes Foundation.
