Obituary

Ralph J. Marcelli 1931-2011 Ralph J. Marcelli of Mashpee, MA passed away on October 19th, 2011 at Falmouth Hospital with his family and clergy by his side. He is survived by his wife Marilyn (Desrosiers) Marcelli; two daughters Karen E. and her husband Chris Hughes of Weatherford, TX and Nancy M. and her husband G. Steve Helmers of Richardson, TX; and his only sibling Nancy (Marcelli) Pion of Southbridge, MA, He also leaves 3 cherished grandchildren: Joseph Helmers and Lee and Ella Hughes and 2 nieces, Connie and Cathy as well as a very special nephew, Michael Pion and his son Joseph of Southbridge. MA. He was pre-deceased by his first wife Mary Ellen (Moss) Marcelli of Hondo, TX who died in 1997. He was the son of the late Costantino Marcelli and Helen Tieri Marcelli. Ralph was born in Southbridge, MA and graduated from Mary E. Wells High School in 1949. He attended Northeastern University for 2 years prior to joining the United States Air Force where he served 2 years in Korea. Upon discharge from the military, he joined the Jesuit Order in Mobile, AL which he left in 1963. From there he continued his graduate studies at the University of Texas in Austin. Following this schooling he worked for Psychological Research in Austin where he created programmed texts used in training medical assistants for the Army. He worked as a Math and Science Editor for the Steck-Vaughn Publishing Co in Austin. From there he joined the Council of State Governments in Lexington, KY as Deputy Director of the Office of Communications where he was responsible for editing and writing articles for government publications among them "The Book of the States", published annually, where some of his writings may be found. He also was responsible for the design of many report covers. Realizing he was missing out on seeing his children grow up he decided to take a position as a High School Math teacher in his wife's hometown of Hondo, TX and later became the head of the Math Dept. of South San Antonio High School from where he eventually retired. He had spent the last 12 years in Mashpee with his second wife Marilyn. While in Mashpee he became involved with the Mashpee School Committee and also the Mashpee Sewer Commission until becoming ill. Ralph was an excellent sculptor and enjoyed and appreciated all phases of art. His passion was gardening and working outdoors. Ralph was truly a Renaissance Man and will be missed by so many friends, colleagues and students whose lives he touched throughout his own lifetime. Visiting hours in the John-Lawrence Funeral Home 3778 Falmouth Rd.(RT28). Marstons Mills on Sat. Oct. 22 from 3-5pm. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, Oct. 25, 11 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hondo, burial will follow in the Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Lung Association in his name.
