Ronnie Glenn
Mason
November 27, 1948 – September 26, 2021
Ronnie Glenn Mason of Hondo, beloved local country singer, left on the wings of a snow white dove on Sunday, Sept. 26 , 2021, to meet his Lord. He was 72 years of age.
Born Nov. 27, 1948, in Houston, he was the son of Richard Dave and Florine Ezetta Magee Mason. After contracting polio at an early age, he overcame many challenges throughout his lifetime.
He found his calling as a Country and Western singer. He was named Entertainer of the Year in 1991 by the Brush Country Music Jamboree in George West; 1993 Male Vocalist by the Cross Timbers Country Opry in Stephenville; and was honored for "generous support and community spirit" in 2003 by SA Celebrates ADA and invited to perform on a PBS television music program. He also spent a week in Norway as one of two Americans who headlined the Stor Utendørs Country Music Koncert.
His talents also included songwriting. In "Sticks and Wheels" he put the challenges of living with handicaps into words and music.
Always in demand locally, Ronnie was pleased to be able to share his God-given talent with his friends and fans. Among other venues, he regularly performed at the Medina County Fair, Hondo National Bank's Cowboy Breakfast, nursing homes, fundraising events, weddings, funerals, and a multitude of other area functions. He entertained diners at Bill and Rosa's KK Steak House in D'Hanis on weekends for the last 20 years. He was also a DJ for many years at radio station KRME (predecessor of KCWM).
Ronnie recorded four albums, one of which featured old-time Gospel songs. He was currently serving as worship leader at Cowboy Church in God's Country in D'Hanis.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of some 40 years, Dorothy Ellen Meiners Mason; and his siblings, Wanda Sue Gaston, Jerry D., Larry W., Doyle E., and Richard E. Mason.
Ronnie is survived by his daughter, Kimber Brawner of Hondo; stepsons, Robert Jopling (Kellie), Burl C. Jopling III and Donald Ray Jopling (Sandy), all of Devine; grandchildren, Ty Brawner and Tyler, Katie, Madison and Kayla Jopling; and brother, Gary P. Mason of Arizona.
