Roy John Bohlen, age 89, of Hondo passed away Friday, November 30, 2007. Roy was born December 15, 1917 to John and Emma Bohlen. He attended Hondo High School where he was a charter member of the Hondo FFA and Salutatorian of his graduating class. He attended Draughon's Business School in San Antonio for a short time after High School. Financial problems caused by the depression of the 1930's brought Roy home to Hondo. He married Aleen Grell on August 22, 1940, and they started their life together in Hondo. Roy began working for The Hondo National Bank as a teller. When World War II broke out, Roy and Aleen moved to Orange, Texas for 8 years to serve their country as civil service employees. There, Roy worked on some of the first IBM machines or computers. At the end of the war, the couple returned to Hondo. Upon his return, Roy purchased his first beer distributorship, Grand Prize Beer. This was the beginning of a very long career as a beer distributor in South Texas. He sold various beers over the span of 30 plus years including Jax and Schlitz, "The beer that made Milwaukee famous". After selling the beer distributorship in 1981, Roy began to really enjoy life, doing what he loved most- raising cattle and spending time in the country. Roy loved being outdoors hunting and fishing. He spent many hours pursuing these activities with his boys on his ranches near D'Hanis and Bandera. He also enjoyed playing baseball with his friends in the Highway 90 League in his younger days. He was a member of the Hondo Hermann Sons Lodge, the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department (retired), and the Texas Cattleman's Association. Roy was raised in the Lutheran church. During his boyhood and young adulthood, he belonged to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Quihi where he was baptized on March 17, 1918. He was confirmed in the same church on September 7, 1930. In 1963, he became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo where his membership remained until his death. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Aleen Bohlen; two sons, Alan Bohlen and wife Linda of Hondo and Galen Bohlen and wife Lillie of San Antonio; six grandchildren Juliana, Kelsey, and Brooke Bohlen of Hondo and Lauren, Kristen, and Kyle Bohlen of San Antonio; step-sister, Mary Ann Hartmann; three sisters-in-law, Velma Saathoff, Della Bohlen and Wilma Bohlen; and various nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Bohlen; sisters and brothers-in-law, Esther and Clarence Saathoff and Lucille and Ehme Saathoff; and brothers, Clarence and Harold Bohlen. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Guinn-Horger Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 3, 2007 at 2:00 in the afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hondo with Pastor Dave Mayer presiding. The casketcarriers will be Robert "Bobby" Bohlen, Cordell Bohlen, Howard Saathoff, Richard Saathoff, Jim Cain, Dennis Schirmer. Interment will follow in the Oakwood Section of the Hondo Cemetery.
