Ruth Marie (Riff) Shapiro, age 82, of New Fountain passed away Friday, July 23, 2010. Born Sept. 10, 1927, in New Fountain, she was the daughter of Robert Herman Riff and Elsie Corine (Schweers) Riff. She attended the two-room New Fountain School and graduated from Hondo High School. After 33 years, she retired as Vice President of Lobby Operations for Bank of the Southwest (now Bank One) in Houston, having started as a bookkeeper. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother; a talented seamstress and cook. She was active in her church and in the Schweers Historical Foundation. She is preceded in death by her parents and her son, Michael Joseph Shapiro. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Sam O. Shapiro; daughter, Carol Ann Shapiro-Parker of Houston; grandchildren, Stephanie Parker Hyman, Daniel Shapiro, Troy Parker, David Shapiro, Lee Andrea Parker Carrijo and Mary Beth Shapiro; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin Douglas Riff; aunt, Ruby Schweers Sebera; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and first cousins. Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 27, 2 p.m. at New Fountain United Methodist Church. Pallbearers were Chris Roberts, Fred Carrijo, David Hernandez, Dan Shapiro, David Shapiro and Troy Parker. Interment was at New Fountain Cemetery.
