Seferina Mares Fernandez of Hondo, age 87, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021.

Born in D'Hanis, Aug. 26, 1933, she was the daughter of Pedro and Feleciana Oranday Mares.

Although she had no children of her own, she became a proud, loving mother to two nephews and three nieces, Johnny, Marty, Belinda, Melissa and Caroline.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Maria Ignacia Aguinaga Mares; husband, Ignacio R. Fernandez; brothers-in-law, Silvino Gonzales, Eristeo F. Gonzales and Francisco Cruz, Jr.; and nephew, Cesar "Nato" Patino.

Survivors include nieces and nephews she raised as her own children, Andrew "Johnny" (Sandy) Gonzales of Utah, Martin "Marty" (Rachel) Gonzales of Hondo, Belinda (Luis) Altamirano, Melissa (Samuel) Mata and Caroline Patino, all of Utah; brothers, Jose "Joe" (Alicia) Mares of Hondo, Pedro Jr. "Pete" (Marisella) Mares of Abilene, Roberto "Bobby" (Beatrice) Mares Sr. of Sabinal and Andres "Andy" (Linda) Mares of Brownwood; and sisters, Simona M. Gonzales of Utah, Beatrice M. Gonzales and Jesusita "Susie" Cruz, both of Hondo, Margarita "Margie" (Roger) Sadon of Arizona, Juanita "Janie" Castillo of Devine and Guadalupe "Lupe"(Jose) Ytuarte of Harper.

Visitation at St. John the Evangelist Catholic will be Friday, Aug. 20, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with recitation of the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m., all at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery will be at 2:30 p.m.
