Selma Marie Rothe Laughlin Crabb, age 95 of Hondo, returned home to her Creator June 8, 2019. She was born Feb. 26, 1924, to Carl Frederick and Johanna Christina "Jane" Rudinger Rothe at the family ranch in D'Hanis, Texas. Selma attended Seco School near her home. She married a Garner State Park Civilian Conservation Corps "boy," Guy Raymond Laughlin, from Barksdale, on Oct. 29, 1940, in Waxahachie, Texas. Their only child, MaryAnn, was born Aug. 29, 1944, at Kelly Field Station, San Antonio, while Guy served his country in the Army Air Corps. The Laughlin family lived in Uvalde, San Marcos, and San Antonio while Guy pursued a Master's Degree. They divorced in 1970 while living in Helotes. Selma married Leslie Lee Crabb March 12, 1970. After his death Feb. 5, 1998, she continued to live in San Antonio. She spent the last five years of her life in Hondo. Selma was an outstanding homemaker; a superb venison preparer; an excellent seamstress; loving wife, mother and friend. "Mono" was always a role model for her daughter. Selma's life revolved around caring for her family, dancing to old country and western music, helping others, and making beautiful clothesshe made MaryAnn's wedding dress in 1973. She never met a stranger. As a matter of fact, most people she met were somehow related to her! Selma will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leslie Lee Crabb; son-in-law, William "Bill" Abbott; brother, Casper Oscar Rothe; and sisters, Clefta Louise Rothe and Roma Augusta Rothe. Selma is survived by her daughter; sister, Dorothy Jean Rothe Cantwel; stepson, Larry Lee Crabb; nieces, great-nieces and -nephews, and cousins by the score. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 11, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Guinn Funeral Home, Hondo. No funeral service will be held. She will be buried as she requested, next to her parents in the Rothe Cemetery, D'Hanis. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
