Obituary

Sylvia Rose Green, age 64, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 28, 2019. She was born June 2, 1954 in Castroville, to Fred Sylvan Jungman and Mary Lee Oefinger Jungman. She attended St. Louis Catholic School through eighth grade and graduated from Medina Valley High School in 1972. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Southwest Texas State University. Sylvia obtained a Master's Degree in Education with a focus in Reading Specialization from Sul Ross University. She continued her postgraduate studies at Our Lady of the Lake University, earning a Master's Degree in Library Science. Sylvia's career in education began at Medina Valley ISD where she taught fourth grade for two years. For the next 34 years, she worked in Hondo at Meyer Elementary, where she taught second grade for more than 15 years. Her remaining years were spent as the campus librarian where she fostered her love of reading in hundreds of children. In fact, Sylvia so effortlessly knew every single student's name and reading level on a campus with hundreds of children. This was Sylvia's true calling. Even while retired, she continued to foster her love for reading in children by working at Mother's Day Out and Friends Academy. Sylvia's adventurous spirit led her to become an avid traveler as she ventured around America and the world. Her travels took her to Macedonia, Greece, Peru (Amazon Jungle and Sacred Valley), South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, and China. Her travels within the United States included Chicago, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Oakland, and numerous national parks. She and her husband's love for their native state took them to many state parks, her favorite being Caddo Lake. Sylvia was very active in the community from the time she was young. In her youth, she was involved in the original Castroville Alsatian Dancers Club, Rio Medina 4-H, and was a Medina Valley twirler. As an adult she continued to be involved in community activities: Texas Librarian Association, Medina County Rodeo Club, Hondo 4-H, Saint John's Catholic Church Choir, Rock N Cedar Square Dance Club, and Hondo Art League. In addition to her love for reading and traveling, Sylvia discovered a new love in her golden years-her love for art. Indeed, her artwork lights up her beautiful country home. Sylvia will be remembered for her deep faith, gentle spirit, and selfless love for others. She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, and sister-in-law, Yolanda (Joey) Jungman. Sylvia is survived by her husband of 44 years, Robin Lee Green; daughters, Angela Kay (Eric) Bendele and Amilee Nichole (Jarrett) Santos, all of Hondo; son, Andrew Paul (Dyana) Green of Oakland; brothers, Dr. Fred (Wendy) Jungman of Alva , Oklahoma, Tom Jungman of Karnes City, Terry (Sarah) Jungman of Kaufman, Joel "Joey" Jungman of Dripping Springs, Marty (Karen) Jungman of West, and David (Valerie) Jungman of Castroville; sisters, Anne (Dr. Gene) Bendele of Devine and Mary Beth (Scott) Francis of Rio Medina. In addition, she has five grandchildren, Lilly, Abigail, and Nicolaus Bendele and Adeline and Heidi Santos. Visitation will be Friday, May 31, 9:15 to 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Holy Rosary recited at 10 a.m. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m., and interment will be at Hondo Cemetery. The family suggests memorials may be made to Food For The Poor or donations of books may be made to Friends Academy.
