Theresa Alice Zinsmeyer, whose Terry's Dance Studio was a rite of passage for a generation of students and adult learners on the city's Northside, passed away peacefully March 18, 2017, at Gentiva Hospice Care Center in San Antonio. Terry, as she liked to be called, was born May 30, 1927, the youngest girl of the five daughters and two sons born to William H. S. and Lucille Foster in Alexandria, LA. When she was fourteen, the family relocated to San Antonio, where she would later graduate from St. Joseph's Academy. Terry and her sisters would inherit their parents' gifts for music and theater and were all accomplished singers and dancers who were regularly asked to entertain the troops at the Catholic U.S.O. in San Antonio before they shipped off for World War II. After the war, Terry enrolled at Arthur Murray Dance Studio and would become among the school's youngest-ever certified ballroom dance instructors. She became a full-time instructor at the studio and, with the encouragement of husband James Zinsmeyer of D'Hanis, TX, began a career as an independent dancer and instructor. With Jim's assistance, she would open Terry's Dance Studio on the city's Northside. Through her unwavering attention to each and every student, the studio was a tremendous success. While still in high school, her sons Bill and Glenn became accomplished dancers and assisted at the studio, making Terry's Dance Studio a true family business. It would go on to expand into larger facilities around San Antonio throughout the next decade. That success would lead to an offer for Terry to coordinate and provide dancers for Teen Time, a very popular weekly local television program modeled on American Bandstand, which ran on the local CBS affiliate. Her love of dance and the desire to share that love would not permit Terry to limit her instruction to her studio. She was also known to generously volunteer her time throughout the area's middle and high schools, including Robert E. Lee, Central Catholic, Providence and Incarnate Word, teaching students as they prepared for their upcoming cotillions and proms. Terry's ability to dance professionally ended prematurely as a result of back surgery and injuries sustained in a car accident in the late 1960s, but the joy she found in dance never subsided. She shared her gifts as a private instructor and continued her work in the city's schools, where her responsibilities would even expand to include choreography for dance programs, for years to come. Following Jim's retirement in 1992, the couple would move to Hondo, TX, where both were involved in many local community activities. Terry was especially proud of her service in the Altar Society of St. John's Catholic Church. After Jim's death in 2000, she would return to San Antonio, where she continued her good works as a Blue Bird volunteer at Methodist Hospital and as a greeter at St. Luke's Catholic Church. Eventually, Terry began a very popular Friday evening ballroom dance program for her friends and peers at the Independence Hill Retirement Community. Theresa is preceded in death by her parents, William H. S. and Lucille Foster, husband, James; sisters, Virginia Fecci amd Pauline Provenzano; and brother, Harry W. Foster. She is survived by two devoted sons, William E. Zinsmeyer and wife Janet of San Antonio and Glenn Sterling Zinsmeyer and husband Louis C. Bixenman of Santa Fe, NM. Theresa has three loving grandchildren, all of San Antonio: Vincent E. Zinsmeyer, his wife Kim and their children, Emily and Brantley; Craig Zinsmeyer and his wife Amy and their children, Zachary and Nicholas; Alisa and her husband Bill Young and their children Summer and Kathryn. She is also survived by older sisters, Mary Louise Zenner and Patricia Barnas and her husband George of San Antonio; brother, George H. Foster and his wife Georgia of Augusta, GA; sister-in-law, Emily Beck of D'Hanis; and brothers-in-law, Herb Zinsmeyer of Austin and Mike Spaight of Greenville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Theresa was an inspiring figure in the lives of the Foster and Zinsmeyer families. The family requests that donations be made to the Theresa A.
