Verna Belle Katherine (Benke) Steubing passed away at home on the family farm in Hondo on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, surrounded by her 10 children and their families. Born Sept. 29, 1927, in Helotes to Samuel and Anna (Ahrens) Benke, she was baptized, confirmed and married in Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes, as were her parents. She graduated in 1945 from Edison High School where she was head varsity cheerleader. She married Muriel Steubing on June 28, 1947. Verna Belle was dedicated to her faith, family and community. She and Muriel were in the dairy business for over 50 years, working side by side. She was instrumental with her family in the organization and leadership of the Helotes 4-H Club and the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show. Some joys in her life included sewing for her children, cooking many wonderful meals, gardening, canning and baking. She also enjoyed spending time with Muriel in fishing, hunting, traveling in later life, and spending time with their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1985 the family moved from their farm at Helotes and relocated to Hondo. The family transferred from Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo, where she became very involved. A member of Texas Woman for Agriculture, she was instrumental in organizing the first annual Ag in the Classroom program for 4th graders in Medina County and gave her demonstration of separating milk and churning butter for many years. She was involved in many community organizations and activities, including the Hondo Garden Club and Medina County Food Pantry. Her kindness, loving smile and gentleness will be missed by all. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Muriel E. Steubing; parents, Samuel and Anna Benke; and brothers, Raymend Benke and Eugene Benke. She is survived by 10 children, 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Darrell (Betty) Steubing, Daniel (Sandra) Steubing, Patricia (Walton) Daugherty, Deborah (David) Jacobs, Richard (Lorraine) Steubing, Rebecca (Pete) Burton, Dawn (William) Carroll, David (Deborah) Steubing, Heidi (Douglas) Trimble and Dee (Tom) Vester. Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 2, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Guinn-Horger Chapel, Hondo. Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hondo.
