Obituary

Vivian Lena Biry Zinsmeyer age, 92 of Hondo, passed away Oct. 21, 2018. Born in D'Hanis, Oct. 12, 1926, she was the daughter of Henry August and Hulda Johanna Langfeld Biry. Vivian attended St. Anthony's Catholic School and D'Hanis High School. She enjoyed studying history and the arts, was in the pep squad and salutatorian of her senior class. She graduated from Texas State College for Women (Texas Woman's University) in Denton, with a BA in business education and a minor in economics. She wanted to be a secretary but began teaching instead. Her successful teaching career of 33 years began at D'Hanis HS and continued at Meyer Elementary, Lacy Jr. High and McDowell Jr. High in Hondo. She loved her students and their eagerness to learn. Although she taught business administration, English and Language Arts, she sneaked in the arts every chance she got. Many students would speak to her in town and comment on her beautiful handwriting. After marrying her hometown sweetheart, Jerome John Zinsmeyer, they made their home in Hondo and began their family of three children. Vivian was very involved in the community and in her church, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she was an active member of the Altar Society and one of the founders of St. John's Historical Association. She served the church community as a religious education teacher, with hospital visitation and on the bereavement committee. She was also a Camp Fire Girl leader; an active member of Iota Epsilon Sorority, Texas Retired Teacher Association and Castro Colonies Heritage Association. She belonged to several bridge groups. In 2001, she was commissioned a "Yellow Rose of Texas" by Governor Rick Perry. After retiring, she turned to her love of painting and joined Hondo Art League. Many of her paintings have been given as treasured gifts to family and friends. She was a dedicated child of God. Her faith was first in her life. A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, she adored her family and prayed for them daily. She was committed to her career and enjoyed her retirement. She was devoted to her dear friends with whom she had so much fun. She loved sports, especially the San Antonio Spurs and any Hondo Owl sport. She loved being with family, family vacations, watching her children and grandchildren in their many activities, the fine arts, playing cards, traveling and was an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Joe Henry and Jacob C. Biry; brother-in-law, Joe Koch; and son-in-law, Charles Pat' Agold. Survivors include her children, Suann Agold of Boerne, and Gary (Mary) Zinsmeyer and Renae (Clarence) McNiel, all of Hondo; grandchildren, Cathryn (Demetrie) Mitchell, Carl (Leigh Ann) Schwope, Rebecca (Dave) Henne, Patricia (Arjun) Ghosh, Karen (Fred) Pennell, Lisa (Darrell) Craddick, Duane Agold, Laura (Tim) Graff, Tammy (Michael) Neuman, Meggie (Dustin) Baumann, Brenda Zinsmeyer, Gari Nell Zinsmeyer, Lana (Trey) Cox, Ryan McNiel, Virgina Bess McNiel, and Clare McNiel; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Elaine Koch of San Antonio; sisters-in-law, Doris and Patricia Biry, both of San Antonio; and her ZMZ Ranch family. Visitation is 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, with recitation of the Rosary at 10 a.m. and Mass at 10:30 a.m., all at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, D'Hanis. Memorials may be made to St. John's Historical Association, 2102 Ave. J, Hondo TX 78861. Condolences: www.guinn-horger.com.
