"Willie" Mund
January 17, 1944 – September 22, 2024
William C. "Willlie" Mund of D'Hanis, age 80, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2024, at home surrounded by family.
Born January 17, 1944, in Fredericksburg, Texas he was the son of Herman and Mamie Houy Mund. He attended Doss and Fredericksburg schools. He married Betty Schmidt of Mason, Texas on December 23, 1968. The couple celebrated their 55th anniversary last year with the whole family.
Willie faithfully served his country in the Army Security Agency, where he was stationed at Kagnew Station in Amara, Ethiopia, Africa. Betty joined him and they experienced traveling through parts of Africa and going on a hunting safari. This is where they welcomed their first born, Tara.After being honorably discharged from the Army, he managed two ranches in Medina County, Texas. This is where they welcomed their second child, Chad. Willie received commendations for Excellence in Grazing Management and was a member of the Young Farmers. He attended Texas Tech, Tarleton, and Uvalde Junior College. Willie followed his dream of becoming a Texas Peace Officer and received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. He served Medina County as Constable Pct 2 for two terms.
He loved his Opa Willie Farms peach orchard and its wide variety of peaches. He had a passion for picking his peaches first thing in the morning, so he opened his first peach stand in D'Hanis which is when he became known as Opa Willie. Later he opened a larger peach stand on Hwy 90 just east of D'Hanis. He was known for his peaches and his vegetable stand for five years until the drought took the orchard.
Willie had a talent for leather tooling and spent time in his leather shop producing beautiful work for himself and others.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Schmidt Mund; daughter, Tara Mund (Wayne Zerr) of D'Hanis and Chad Mund (Beth) of St Charles, Illinois; grandchildren, Maeghan Heyen (Parker Hampton) of Welcome, Maryland, Caleb Heyen of Honolulu, Hawaii, Amanda Mund and Blake Mund; great-granddaughter, Brynleigh Lou Hampton; and sister, Corine Klose (David) of Fredericksburg, Texas.
A Celebration of Life and Reception will be held Sunday, October 20th, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the D'Hanis Community Center at 7475 County Road 524.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice or directed to the family, in Willie's name.
